School Stuff

Be prepared for a very full post, including multiple videos (both completely related and tangentially related).

Cat's 5th grade class memorized this song
to help everyone learn the state capitals:

Then they sang the song during Show What You Know.
(Cat is on the far right and the screen above them showed the video
so the rest of the students could see it while the class sang.)

I was really glad I was there to watch Cat's class sing their song, because
later in the Morning Meeting, Cat was announced as a Noble Knight (outstanding
student) for her class.  She indulged me enough to get a picture of her in her crown.

We all watched the video and listened to the song so much as Cat
was trying to memorize it that it kind of became ingrained in us.
Jack  was so into it that he wanted to make a spin-off video:

And in case those videos aren't enough TOURING for you,
check out this Tour the World video.  I think these are so great.

At the beginning of the year, Jack brought this home:
What struck me about this little project was the picture of the RV on the right.
Now, you have to understand that Ben and the kids have a bit of an
obsession with RVs.  One of Ben's ambitions in life is to own an RV
and tour the United States (cue the song...)  The kids have jumped on board
(no pun intended) and are sure that owning an RV is the epitome of "making it."

One day Jack told Ben that he doesn't ever want to have a job.  He just wants to
live in an RV.  Yet, the RV in Jack's school worksheet doesn't show up in
any of the NEEDS categories.  I'm not sure if I should be proud of Jack for
knowing the difference between a need and a want, or proud of him for
following his teacher's directions explicitly.

Either way, this kid makes me smile.

Another example:

Jack has been known to make his homework answers into comic strip
stick figures.  He doesn't do it often, but once in a while I'll look over
his homework and see something like this.  If you look closely, you can
tell that he got most of the answers correct.  Unfortunately, arithmetic
isn't the ideal outlet for expressing your creativity...

The 2nd Grade presented a Show What You Know toward the end of
October where they sang songs for all of the times tables up to 10.

You actually can see Jack if you look for the kid in the bright yellow
fireman jacket in the video below:

Thanks to a friend who watched Luke that morning, I was able to chaperone
Eliza's first ever Field Trip, which included her first ever Ride on a School Bus.
This means I have accompanied all 3 of my school-age children
on their first real Field Trips.  Pretty cool.

We went to Cornbelly's in Lehi where they had lots of fun activities for kids.
The favorite was the giant jumping pillow, and the kids also enjoyed the variety
of playground equipment, the hayride, and the play houses.

Eliza with her teacher.

A couple of weeks ago Eliza was recognized as a Noble Knight
for her class.  I only wondered why it took them until November...

Everyone is giving her a thumbs up in this picture.

We enjoyed delicious and free Krispy Kreme doughnuts
when we brought in the kids' report cards from the first term.
Luke might have enjoyed them the very most...
