Frequently, when kids come to our house to play, they get annoyed that we don't have video games and we don't usually let the watch TV during playdates. This is of course exacerbated by the fact that our yard is so small right now. But then something like this happens and I smile to myself and remember what a good thing it is for the kids to be forced to get creative and make their own fun sometimes. Cat and her best friend pulled out all of the cardboard scraps in the garage (which I use for spray painting and other projects, if you can't tell) and made themselves a house.
(BUT BE WARNED: sometimes this approach to playdates backfires. Like the day recently when Cat and her friends decided to pour water on the floor of the garage, draw on it with sidewalk chalk, then play in/on the slick wet chalky surface. When I found them, Cat was actually lying down on the chalky floor. Luckily, nobody got hurt, but I was pretty embarrassed to send those girls home looking the way they did. A forced period of sunbathing dried them off a bit at least.)
