How does our garden grow?

We have enjoyed gardening this spring/summer.  In addition to the Square Foot Garden we planted with fruits, vegetables, and herbs, we have a little Fairy Garden in our back yard.  Eliza helped me get it ready one day, with the most perfect little castle and some little flowers I dug up from our front flower bed.  (Confession: I dug them up because I thought they were weeds, but they were so cute that I decided to reuse them for the Fairy Garden anyway.  Imagine my delight when I found out they are NOT weeds, but are a flowering ground cover plant called Alyssum.  I'd like to say I knew it all along, but that would be lying.)

And here is our little SFG when the Phase One plants were beginning to produce.  Our spinach and lettuce have done remarkably well.  We've been eating salad from the garden for several weeks.  Yeah!

More recently we've begun harvesting other vegetables as well.  We've had broccoli, carrots, sugar snap peas, and tomatoes, in addition to the spinach and lettuce. The kids love harvesting from our little garden, especially pulling up the carrots.  They also prefer eating them while the greens are still attached.

There are several plants that aren't ready to produce yet, so we're looking forward to okra, cucumbers, peppers, squash, zucchini, basil, and hopefully some watermelon eventually.  Mmmm.

Also, Jack and I had a conversation today about what it means to be healthy.  I love his explanation.  In order to be healthy, "Eat healthy food, keep your body clean, wash yourself off, and clean your ears."

  1. I laughed out loud at Jack's explanation. AND wow what a neat garden - even real carrots! We've never been able to grow carrots. ( I especially love the fairy garden)
