The Drive-In Movie

Cat and Jack had a drive-in movie night at their school in March.  The idea was that each kid have a cardboard box that he or she would convert into a car.  Then families would go to the school gym and have a gourmet dinner of sloppy joes, chips, a drink, and a soda for $1.50, and miscellaneous movie snacks for sale a la carte, while watching "Big Hero 6."

Cat came up with the idea of making her box into a food truck called "Sloppy 2 Go." Guess what was on the menu?  Jack and I collaborated on his flamin' hot race car.  I cut, taped, and spray painted the box, he drew the flames, I cut them out, and he glued them on.  I like the way it turned out.

Side note: I was fairly certain that I would get overwhelmed and feel like a slacker if I let myself look at Pinterest or even Google before beginning this project.  So I avoided both.  And after seeing the pictures of the event afterward, I made the right decision.  Some of the cars at the activity were out of control.  I think some Moms just have too much time on their hands.  Doing as much as I did felt like a stretch.

That day was a free dress-down day at school, so I made Jack a simple Baymax t-shirt to wear using a stain-free under shirt that was on his shelf.  I printed out a picture of Baymax, traced it with a Sharpie pen, and called it good.  It took about 15 minutes that morning and Jack LOVED it.

The timing was pretty much perfect on the night of Cat's recital.  The recital ended at the same time doors opened for the drive-in movie.  Cat changed her clothes in the bathroom, then Ben took The Bigs straight to the school.  I took Luke home to go to sleep.

It turned out to be a good thing that I took Luke home because the place was packed.

But the kids had a great time.  I'm glad they were able to go do something fun together, with Daddy, and see their friends from school too.

  1. They will remember that forever. I just love the cars Cat and Jack came up with! What great imaginations. Thanks for honoring their own ideas.
