Our Weekend

On Friday afternoon, Cat had a friend come over to play, then Jack was invited to another friend's house.  While Jack was gone, the girls helped me make Thumbprint Cookies.  I've been wanting to try my hand at these for quite a while but instead of finding an actual recipe, I decided to experiment and see if my Grandma's Shortbread recipe would work - and it did!  I made a full batch of shortbread dough, baking half of it as usual and shaping the other half into balls with thumb prints full of raspberry preserves and it worked great.  Mine didn't hold their shape as well as my Mom's recipe, so I'll have to get her version one of these days and compare notes.  But I still consider it a successful experiment.  The girls enjoyed making the thumb prints and filling them with jam.  Great helpers!

Then we enjoyed an early-morning ward Christmas party on Saturday, which was fun, if unfortunately timed.  After everyone had breakfast, Sis. Brown had all of the Primary kids come to the front and she told them the Christmas story, and we sang a few Christmas songs along with it.  Then she had the kids stand up in front with the current and former members of the Bishopric and sing "Jingle Bells." The men were tasked with shaking bells and did a great job.  Sis. Brown also had the kids sing along with "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and told us about how she remembered the story of Rudolph first being released with the Montgomery Ward catalog when she was a kid in the 1930s. Once the singing and storytelling was over, the kids decorated ornaments.  A fun party!

After running some errands later on Saturday, we were home when Jack ended up getting sick with a stomach bug.  He had a bit of a rough time the rest of the day on Saturday, but slept well at night and wasn't sick all day today.  I kept him home from church, and Luke was with us as well since he doesn't love nursery and Ben had to teach Sunday School.  It ended up being a good thing that the three of us were staying home because right before Ben was going to leave to take the girls to church, Luke pulled the curling iron off of our counter and grabbed it with his left hand - the hand he sucks his thumb on - and got a second-degree burn.  He was upset for a while but after a short nap he was much happier.  My poor boys!

In other news, Eliza's hair looked pretty cute all curled today.
