True Stories from Grammy's Visit

My Mom came into town the weekend before Jack's baptism so that she could attend my concert with the Temple Square Chorale.  Ben and Cat had attended the Friday night concert because Cat and Jack had soccer games Saturday afternoon/evening.  Mom arrived early Saturday afternoon and we (I) decided to stay in Salt Lake for the rest of the day instead of driving home to see kids for a couple of hours then driving back up to Salt Lake for the concert.  We had a lovely time eating out, attending the Salt Lake Temple, and watching/participating in a wonderful concert (if I do say so myself).  I had told the kids that they would get to see Grammy the next day and they weren't very happy with that, but resigned themselves to the idea.  Little did I know that the kids' soccer games and the rest of the goings on of the night would keep them up until 9:45pm, and Ben would let them wait up for us after that.  Imagine my surprise when Mom and I walked through the door at 10:00 and saw all four of my little ones running around, giggling, and then climbing over each other to get to Grammy.

The next day, Ben and Mom brought the three older kids up to Salt Lake to attend my first performance in Music and the Spoken Word while a friend watched Luke for us.  The promotional materials say that kids over the age of 6 may attend the broadcast, but the general rule on Temple Square is that children should be 8 in order to attend concerts and other events.  When Mom walked in with the kids (while Ben was parking the car) she was asked how old Eliza was.  Apparently the hosts wanted to follow the "8 and older" rule, but Mom managed to talk Eliza's way into the Tabernacle, and all three of the kids were reported to have been as quiet as mice throughout the rehearsal and broadcast.  I was so glad to have all of them there.

The next day it was our anniversary and Mom insisted that Ben and I go out to dinner and a movie to celebrate.  Ben and I had a great time on our date and were so thankful to Mom for taking care of the kids.  When we got home, she couldn't wait to tell us what happened while we were gone.  I had a 2-liter bottle of root beer I'd bought on sale hidden in the storage room so that when the opportunity for root beer floats arose, I'd be prepared.  Well, I hadn't hidden it well enough.  Apparently our car hadn't left the garage before Cat and the other kids excitedly told Grammy that there was soda in the house!  And they should have it with dinner!  Grammy agreed, and Cat soon ascended the stairs carrying the soda on a pillow.  They didn't drink it all, though...

Mom accompanied Luke and me to Jack's first track meet.  Our friends with boys Jack's and Luke's ages were there because Jack's friend is on the track team as well.  Luke and his friend played together the whole time, and when they weren't running up and down the ramp to the bleachers or driving their toy trucks around, they were being entertained by Mom.  She mostly read to them from a Star Wars book (which was perfect since the meet was on May 4th).  They had so much fun together that by the time we were walking to our cars, Luke's friend waved at Mom and said, "Bye, Grammy!"

Mom happened to be here during an even busier week than normal.  The kids' sports were overlapping so there was more of that to do, Eliza had a dress rehearsal for her upcoming dance recital, and Cat had a big end-of-the-year production she was involved in at BYU.  We took Cat to the rehearsal on Wednesday morning and it should have finished at 11am, giving us enough time to get Eliza home and feed her lunch before she had to be at Kindergarten.  But the rehearsal wasn't over until almost noon, so Mom suggested we grab a quick lunch on our way to taking Eliza to school.  Cat wanted Subway but there wasn't one on the way so I asked if we could try Jimmy John's.  When we pulled up Cat saw the sign that said "FREE SMELLS" and read it aloud.  Then she said in her best teenager-voice, allowing us to hear her eyes rolling, "Awwwwwbiously."  I'm still laughing about that one.

And I have to brag on her mad baking skills, making several dozen cookies of various types for Jack's baptism refreshments, as well as yummy soup for us to eat afterward.  After everything I put her through when she visits, it's amazing that she ever comes back.  Thank you again Mom!  We loved having you here!
