The Eldest

Here's an overdue update about the things Cat's been up to lately...

BASKETBALL
Cat spent the second term playing on her school's basketball team.  They ended up with a losing season but Cat had an absolute blast playing with these girls.  She loved her coach, she loved the experience of traveling on the school bus with the team, and she made significant improvements as a player.

Cat got a huge goose egg in her last game (the picture doesn't do it justice)
when she slipped on the slippery gym floor and hit her head on the bleachers...
where the boys' team was sitting.  Perfect middle school moment.
They stopped the game and checked her for signs of a concussion.
She ended up just sitting out, icing her head for a while, then went back in.

SCIENCE PROJECT
Cat partnered with a friend for a science project studying the effects of temperature on pressure.  The two of them worked well together, and the experiment was really fun.  Even Jack, Eliza, and our friend Tony got in on the action (though Jack had to practice a few times before he was able to make it work - what you can't see in the video below is that as soon as Jack tried to flip the hot can over into the ice water and it didn't work the first time, Eliza said "Fail." and it was pretty funny).

The girls weren't required to participate in the school science fair, but because they could earn extra credit if they did, they did.  Cat's not one to let an extra credit opportunity pass her by.

BLANKETS
Cat read The Hiding Place with her English class this term.  For the final project, the students were assigned to consider what their moral obligation was and then spend 5 hours fulfilling it.  Our family donated a few homemade quilts to a local program for at-risk moms and babies a while ago, and since Cat has been doing some sewing lately she decided to work on quilts for the same program.  I helped but she did the vast majority of the work, and the quilts turned out great.

MISCELLANEOUS

Cat's braiding skills are now officially out of this world.
This is a 5-strand Dutch braid.  She also does this braid on herself.

Me: Eliza's named after Elizabeth Bennett.
Cat: Am I named after Lady Catherine?

I sent the meme on the left to Cat and she thought it was hilarious.
Soon after, I came home from choir and we had the following conversation:
Me: Guess what I did today?!?
Cat: What?
Me: I took a picture with Rick Elliott!
Cat: Mom. (insert exasperated teenage eye roll) Only music nerds know who that is.
Me: Well, YOU know.  So...

Cat had a day off before finals week (for students to meet with teachers and get
caught up on missing work, etc.) so she and I enjoyed ran some errands and
a free breakfast at Chick-fil-A one morning while the other kids were at school.  It was free
because when I tried to pay, the card reader didn't work.  No complaints here.

Cat made delicious crepes with homemade berry sauce and cheesecake filling.

When we were out and about one morning during finals week, she took every opportunity to study.
She's had a great first year of middle school so far, academically and otherwise.

I don't really worry about Cat being on the right track in general.
But then I see things like this (one of her Pinterest boards), and I feel even better.
