A few weeks ago, Jack and his fellow 1st Graders began taking a spelling class every day. Since then he has demonstrated an enthusiasm for spelling that has taken all of us by surprise. Jack now speaks largely in spelling. These are the kinds of things we hear around the house now:
"M-O-M, C-A-N I have S-O-M-E M-I-L-K?"
"C-A-T, L-E-T-S G-O outside."
"D-A-D, where I-S M-Y T-R-A-I-N B-O-O-K?"
Isn't it great that he is practicing spelling so much? And he's learning how to spell new words. When he speak-spells a word incorrectly, we'll tell him how to spell it and he'll repeat it until he gets it right.
It did take some getting used to, though. At first Jack would just yell over and over again, getting louder with each spelling, "M-O-M! M-O-Mmmmm!! M-O-Mmmmmmmm!!!" because it didn't register for me that he was trying to get my attention. Now I usually answer pretty quickly.
That is so funny. I never thought it would have occurred to him to do that. G-O J-A-C-K!
