Dr. Seuss's Birthday and More

On Friday we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday with books, movies, and not-so-fancy cuisine.  (Note: I have found that my traditional Green Eggs and Ham dinner is more palatable if the ham isn't turned green...)

That night Cat went to a birthday party so we had the perfect number of poeople to use the 5 tickets my friend gave me for Young Ambassadors.  (My friend planned to drive her family to Utah for the weekend but decided not to because of a big winter storm.)  We'd never taken the kids to see anything like that and they had a BLAST.  The Young Ambassadors is a group of musical theater majors at BYU who perform scenes from film and stage musicals, complete with singing, choreography, and costumes.  The kids knew many of the songs, but there were some that were new to them and us.  ("Show Off" from Drowsy Chaperone is a new favorite now.)  Eliza was sitting beside me and cracked me up when the group performed "Yorktown/The World Turned Upside Down" from Hamilton.  The kids are familiar with this soundtrack as I've played several selections for them.  Eliza leaned over and said, "Are they trying to rap?"  Well, yes, they were.  And they did pretty well.

Saturday ended up being a day mostly at home, with a little bit of running kids around.  While Cat spent the day at UVU attending a science workshop for kids, Ben and Suz made the rest of us a yummy Loco Moco lunch, which they learned how to make during their trip to Hawaii.  Then Ben and Ben took care of some car issues and the kids had plenty of time to play games, build a fort and an obstacle course, and even watch some TV while we waited for the dads to return.  And since we were just hanging out at the house anyway, Suz whipped up a batch of delicious Swig cookies simply because.  No complaints about that!

We had an early dinner on Sunday so that Cat and Ben could go to New Beginnings at the Church.  I was excited to have some time to just hang out with the other kids and we decided to get out finger puppets for a bit before reading together and heading to bed.  Well, 40 minutes later I had to end the finger puppet plays lest we miss bedtime altogether.  I loved that they enjoyed it so much!
