Eliza's Ninth Birthday

We had fun celebrating Eliza's 9th birthday last month!  She asked for a birthday party but I still struggle when it comes to birthday parties so we did a birthday playdate instead, and it was a lot of fun.  For this special occasion we took advantage of Presidents' Day being a school holiday.  Eliza invited a few friends from school, one girl in our ward, and another girl who lived in our neighborhood before we moved.  They played freeze dance for a while, then spent a long time playing hide and seek in the house before I assembled everyone for cupcakes.

On the Friday before her birthday, Luke and I brought sugar cookies to Eliza's class so we could share the birthday happiness.  It was fun to be there in her class for a few minutes.

Then, the night before her birthday we were at a friend's moving-away dinner and all the guests sang to Eliza.  She didn't seem to mind.

On the big day Eliza was really eager to open presents, so we didn't make her wait very long.  She received lots of wonderful things that she loves, including a fancy mechanical pencil, gumballs for her gumball machine, a new favorite game called "Cover Your Assets," a super-sparkly backpack (and it's blue!), some new books, a set of Pokemon cards, and a great gymnastics mat.  Lucky kid, with generous grandparents!

Eliza's main request when it came to her cake was that it have fondant.  I was hesitant to try to make a fondant cake and I told her that I'd be happy to fulfil that request for her but with the things we had going on that weekend I simply wouldn't be able to prepare the cake ahead of time, so I'd have to spent a big part of her birthday working on it.  She really wanted the fondant.  Thankfully, Cat helped me out a lot.  We made a really yummy yellow cake from scratch, and Cat was in charge of making the buttercream frosting while I made the fondant.  After a lot of time and effort and a few mistakes along the way, we ended up with a cake we all liked.  Including Eliza.  Except she thought it needed more color.  I just wanted to please take pictures of the cake before she altered it, and she kindly agreed.

It's hard to believe that Eliza is NINE now.  We've been so blessed to have her in our family.  She's funny, helpful, kind, smart, creative, energetic, and fun.  I love that girl!
