The Chicken Chronicles 10.30.20

A couple of quick things from last week...
  • When we went to St. George, we relied on the battery-operated door opener to allow the chickens to get out of the coop in the mornings and to be closed in at night.  When we got home on Sunday evening, the chickens were closed in the coop.  The batteries had died on the opener at some point during our weekend away and the chickens had been inside for a day or two (or three, but hopefully not).  They did have food and water inside the coop, but it wasn't intended to be enough for all 5 of them for the whole weekend.  They were okay when we got home, but happy to get out and have some more food and water!  The door opener worked just fine after Ben changed the batteries.
  • It got so cold in the following days that the chickens' water outside froze solid and Ben had to pour boiling water into their water.  It might be a long winter.
  • And here's the view of the inside of the nesting boxes when we gather eggs (unless one of the hens lays an egg in the yard, which happens on occasion):
