Christmas Vacation: Atlanta

We were so glad to finally arrive at Pops's house!  After a yummy dinner, we opened our Christmas presents from Pops's family.  We had some great surprises and everyone was really excited.  Thank you again!  Then it was dessert time, and Pops was kind enough to pass on his years of experience in ice-cream-eating, and teach Luke how to enjoy every last drop.

Breakfast the next morning was Pops's Always Delicious French Toast, which, as the name indicates, was delicious.  Then we headed out to see a cool house Pops and Kelly are in the process of buying.  Maybe they'll be living there next time we're in town?  We stopped at Steak & Shake on our way home, which was great because I was able to cross another restaurant off of my Southern Cuisine bucket list.  Then Ben insisted I take a picture with the Jeep I drove in high school and college.  I love that my Dad still owns it.

That night the girls and I joined Pops and Kelly for a community service experience that took place at the CNN Center in downtown Atlanta.  Kelly works for a nonprofit that serves homeless children and they supply a free dinner to the kids affiliated with the organization every week.  It was great to participate and learn more about the organization and the lives of the people it serves.

The next million or so pictures are from World of Coke, one of Atlanta's biggest tourist attractions.  Even though we took some fun pictures, and we enjoyed the tasting room, and there was some cool Coca-Cola paraphernalia and history, I was disappointed.  I'd been to the original Coke Museum years ago and it was much more interesting.  This one felt like an interactive commercial, just dumbed-down and gimmicky.  But I'd been curious about it for a long time, and now we know what it's like, so that's good.  (Also, it made me sick thinking about the 3rd world countries where people are lacking clean water and nutritious food, yet soda companies have packaged drinks in smaller containers to make them affordable for locals so they can still enjoy Coke.  I tried not to think about it and just have fun.)

We stopped at Savage Pizza on our way home.  This was a fun stop because my family used to eat at this little place when we would visit my Dad at law school, which was while I was in high school.  It's in a colorful little area called Little Five Points, which caters to folks who embrace alternative lifestyles, so a comic-book themed pizza place fits in perfectly.

The rest of the day was spent playing with toys and games and just hanging out.  Luke and Jack spent most of their time boxing on the Wii, and Cat was mostly on the air hockey table.

We packed up the next morning and headed back down to Florida, but before we left, we had to get a picture of Eliza and Riley with the dogs.  Addie, the little dog Riley is holding, is part of Dad's household but his family was dogsitting Benji, the dog Eliza is holding in the picture.  Benji was very friendly and playful and the kids absolutely loved hanging out with him.  Eliza even taught him a trick.

We had lots of fun with Pops, Kelly, Kyle, and Riley (as well as Benji and Addie)!  It was a great visit!

  1. Id like to meet up with Kelly's group when we go near February. Sounds like a well rounded Christmas. Really benefitted by your review of Coca-Cola. I have wondered as much and hearing it said means I am prepared. There is one in Orlando too and I suspect it is even more flashy and less substance.
