I Love to See the Temple

Toward the end of March, Eliza finally went to the temple!  It's been so hard to get an appointment for baptisms that I finally decided to take the kids out of school early one afternoon so that Cat and Jack could go back and Eliza could attend for the first time.  It worked out for Ben to be able to attend with us, so he baptized the kids and I helped as a witness and just enjoyed being in the temple with the kids.  Everyone was in such a good mood when we arrived at the temple that they even took pictures with real smiles!  (Except for Ben?)

It was extra special because all of the kids were able to do family names, and Cat and Jack had found their own names during a Youth activity (months ago).  One of the relatives Cat was baptized for was Ben's Great Aunt Wyba.  It was really touching for Ben and me, since we knew her - that doesn't happen often.

Eliza's names were mostly on Oma's side, which was particularly poignant since Oma had passed away at the beginning of the month.  I'd already imagined the reunions Oma was enjoying soon after her passing; she must have felt incredible joy as she was embraced by her husband, daughter, mother, and her beloved brother-in-law and sister-in-law.  As I sat in the temple I thought about her having additional reunions in the future as more of her family members accept the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

That night when I asked Eliza about her experience in the temple she said that it was like "everyone found their zen."  That makes sense to me - temples are definitely more calm and peaceful than anywhere else I can think of, and people behave more calmly and peacefully when they're inside temples too; the holiness of the building helps the people to feel the Spirit, which makes the building more sacred.  It's a beautiful cycle.

I like this picture Eliza randomly snapped when I was holding my phone with the selfie camera pointed at the sky.  Maybe I'll call it Light of the World.

When Kids Have a Random Day off of School

Early in March, Jack had a day off of school.  It was the ACT day for Juniors, so they were the only ones allowed on campus.  I convinced him to go on a short hike with me, to Battle Creek Falls, a short hike that's nearby which we've hiked together a few times before.  I think it's more beautiful and impressive in winter than it is any other time of year, and Jack had a great time trying to hike up the small mountain of ice at the base of the waterfall.

Two days later, Eliza and Luke had a random extra-long weekend, and since I feel better about life if I get the kids out of the house on days like that, we went to Farm Country at Thanksgiving Point.  Unfortunately, I didn't choose a very good day - it was very cold and windy - but we still had fun, even if we didn't stay very long.

Those ducks and geese can bite!

So many Waffles-cousins!

Ski Season 2022

Jack decided to sit this ski season out with me, but the other three kids and Ben wanted to ski/snowboard.  Eliza wanted to be in ski school another year, and she had a great time in the most advanced class available, hanging out on the back mountain and skiing lots of black diamond runs.  She had to miss the first class because we had Covid, but loved attending the other three classes.  I enjoyed at least getting to see Sundance when I dropped her off and picked her up - it's so beautiful!

The new high-speed lift!
A small part of me wanted to ski just to ride on the lift.

I spotted a turkey near the parking lot.

Pretty as a picture.

Eliza coming down at the end of the last day of ski school.

Luke didn't want to do ski school, but it would have been helpful for him.  He went skiing with Ben a couple of times and that was enough for him.

Eliza and Ben had one more outing in March.  The two of them definitely spent more time on the slopes than Cat and Luke.  (Cat did go a couple of times, but I don't have any photographic evidence.)

January & February Miscellany

We needed to run an errand in Park City late in the day one Saturday in January.  We'd been just hanging around the house all day and the kids were in holey pants and grubby tshirts.  We told them that we'd be going somewhere kind of nice (everything in Park City is at least kind of nice...) and they might prefer to change into better clothes.  Luke hurried to his room and came back in a few minutes, wearing his suit.  He looked great! But since we would be driving through for a hamburger dinner at the ever popular Dairy Keen on the way to Park City and I didn't want him to get his suit messy, we encouraged him to opt for something more in-between.  We spent some time in a high-end fur and leather store on Main Street and the kids were enamored with the stuffed animals and other products there.  But then again, we all were.

In the course of Saturday cleaning we pulled out a bankers box full of Jack's old journals, stories, comics, pictures, doodles, etc.  Years' worth.  We had fun looking through them - so much fun that I couldn't handle trying to trim the collection, so I set aside the mostly-blank composition notebooks that were in there, and repacked the rest.  At least I know we have another laugh to look forward to when I tackle the project for real!

Keturah invited us to join her family to see Treausre Island at the Hale in Sandy and it was so cool!  They had water surrounding the central stage, and people dove into it several times.  There was also rain.  The play was really good, with extra music written by a local composer, but the effects stole the show.  (See what I did there?)

In other news...

I have a friend who invited us to a BYU hockey game,
since her son is on the team.  It was so fun!

I love finding papers like this.

Mom's Trip to Vegas

This is usually just a blog about the kids and family stuff, but I wanted to document this too, so pardon my intrusion...

Suz wanted to go see Billy Joel in Vegas, and I thought that would be fun, but even more fun with Megan too, and even MORE fun if we could pull off a big surprise and not tell Suz.  So we did!  And it was a truly wonderful 24-hour sisters visit!  A sampling of our day:

Eliza's Birthday

Eliza turned 12!  And she had a really great day.  It fell on a Thursday, which is the day the Tabernacle Choir always rehearses, but since we were still on our Omicron-induced break, I was home all evening to party with the kids.  (Which was fortunate, since Ben ended up stuck in Texas because of a bad storm.)

E has had the Chevron streamers on her doorway since her last birthday.
I decided to keep them on and just add a few blue ones.

E's first year with the official YW birthday sign in the yard!

Raspberry Rolls and KoolAid Jammers at school.

Yummy hibachi dinner.

We finally tried an escape room.
This one was Harry Potter-esque and just spooky enough to keep it exciting.

Ben watched the present-opening and joined in the Happy Birthday singing
over video call.  We missed him but we're glad he was safe.

I'm glad we could have a special day with this special girl.  She's so smart and spunky, confident and comical.  And she's growing up so fast.  It's hard to believe she'll be finished with elementary school this year and joining Cat and Jack at the big kids' school - but she'll love it, and she'll fit right in.
