Flash Backs

I got a nice new phone shortly before we moved away from Georgia.  I wasn't ready to get rid of my old phone when we moved, though, because I had several pictures on it that I needed to retrieve some how.  Believe it or not... I didn't get around to it until we needed to move from our house in Utah into our second house in Utah just a few weeks ago.  I forced myself to figure out how to do it so that I wouldn't continue to move the phone and all of its accompanying parts around.  I was (thankfully!) able to charge it and even found the cord that plugged into the computer, but after spending way too much time working on it, I still couldn't get the pictures to upload.  Alternative?  Take pictures of the phone showing the pictures!  So here you go.  A fun little stroll down memory lane with a surprisingly accurate representation of the people who were such a significant part of our lives while we lived in Georgia.  We miss you guys!

This is one of my all-time favorite pictures of C & J, and the main reason I couldn't let go of the phone.  We were walking through Publix (I miss that place!!) and Cat wanted to put the umbrella up.  I was in a good Mommy mood, so I let her, as long as she behaved with it.  She told me throughout the store that I was getting wet and I just smiled.  I got lots of strange looks from other shoppers, but no harm was done.  I don't even remember any bad luck...

Ben's Return

Ben went on a big trip back in May, spending two weeks in the South Pacific.  While it sounds very exotic and exciting, the purpose of the trip was business, not sight-seeing.  Of course he was able to do some sight-seeing while he was gone, but mostly he met with locals to discuss business-y stuff.  I admit, though, that I didn't feel a whole lot of sympathy when he told me that he didn't sleep well on the little beds there, and that he didn't have electricity for a good portion of his trip, and that the drivers were insane.  :-)

That said, we still decided to make a bit of a fuss when he came back home.  He was traveling with two friends of his and one of the other wives was planning on picking all of the guys up.  So we were able to pull off a fun surprise by meeting him by baggage claim.  The kids and I made signs that afternoon (but they didn't really want to hold them after about 30 seconds in the airport).

The kids were so excited to see Ben when he got to where we were that Jack and Eliza insisted on Ben carrying them.  Poor Ben had been traveling for a long time (18 hours?) and must have been exhausted, but he carried them all the way to the car anyway.

He was hungry and ready to eat some American food so we found a Chick-Fil-A on our way home and let the kids play while he ate.  Eliza was more interested in hanging out with Daddy and helping him finish off his milkshake than playing, though.  The conversation went something like this:

"Ca' I have some?"
"No."
(batting eyes) "Ca' I have SOME?"
"No."
(looking concerned) "Ca' I HAVE SOME?"
"No."
(face reddening) "CA' I HAVE SOME?"
"No."
(tears brimming in her eyes) "CA' I HAVE SOME?"
"Okay."

Ben arrived home on a Saturday night, so between the time change and the super long time he spent traveling, we were willing to let him sleep in late on Sunday - church doesn't start until 1pm anyway.  The kids occupied themselves by making a sidewalk chalk mural in the back yard "for Daddy" Sunday morning.  He was sufficiently impressed.

For FHE that week Ben told us about Vanuatu, the country he was visiting.  He also handed out his gifts for everyone, showed us his pictures, and shared the coins and the shells he'd brought home.

I hadn't prepared an FHE treat but I remembered that we still had some tropical fruit slushy stuff in the freezer from a bridal shower I hosted the weekend before.  PERFECT.

Of course, the best part about Ben's homecoming was
just having Daddy home again.  So glad you're back!

Grammy's Visit

My Mom and I talked several times about when a good time would be for her to come visit.  We talked about the possibility of her coming during her Spring Break (she's a college professor) or later after the semester ended.  But when Ben told me about his 2-week trip to the South Pacific I knew it would make my life much easier for Mom to come then.  So she made it happen, and we had a wonderful week together.  It so happened that it was also just a few weeks before our move, so I was even able to enlist her to help me start getting things ready.  Thanks for everything, Mom!

Provo Library Children's Festival
A few days after Mom arrived, the Provo Library had a big children's festival.  I knew there would be some activities and games for the kids, but this was much bigger than I expected.  They had several authors and illustrators there speaking to the kids, doing illustrating demonstrations, and signing books.  There were also tons of things for the kids to do, and many characters to meet.  Of course, the activity my kids were most interested in was pretty passive - waiting in line for an hour to get a balloon animal.  We didn't get to do much else because of the amount of time we had, but if we're here next May, we will definitely go back!

We saw Clifford walking around while we were waiting in line.
They were a little nervous about the Big Red Dog at first... then they warmed up to him.

This table was right beside us as we waited in line.  You could tell the lady your birth date and she would give you a slip of paper with notable events that happened on that date.  I think Jack was more interested in the airplane though...

Cat meets Olivia.

After a very long and patient wait, Jack got what he'd been begging for: a balloon sword.
Cat requested a sword as well, and Eliza received a puppy dog.
See Oma and Opa sitting in the background?  They were in town for the weekend and came along with us.  I love that they live so close!

The biggest name out of all of the authors who came that day was Judy Schachner, who writes the Skippyjon Jones books.  Mom bought a few books and waited in a very short line (who would have thought it would take 5 times longer to get a balloon animal than to have Judy Schachner sign a book?  Maybe we just missed the crowds...) and Ms. Schachner was a gracious and patient autographer.

This is the book Mom bought for Jack and Eliza, with the autograph on the inside cover.  (She bought a book by a different author and had it autographed for Cat - each grandchild received one.)  Thank you Grammy!

Mother's Day
It was a special treat to have not only my Mom in town on Mother's Day, but my grandmother as well.  I made breakfast of cinnamon rolls, eggs, sausage, and fruit for everyone, then we went to church as usual.  After church all of my cousins who live within an hour of us came over, with their families, and the men prepared dinner for the women.  It was great!  I know Ben was sad that he missed out on the fun.  ;-)

Treats from church: cupcakes Cat decorated for me using obscene amounts of candy.
The candy Jack had been coveting for 4 months, then didn't get to receive on his birthday because his sister was sick, he FINALLY got to have on Mother's Day.
A Mother's Day handprint bag with cookies inside.  I'm pretty sure Eliza at least helped with the handprint part in nursery.

Target
Okay, not that there's anything special about going to Target.  But being with Grammy, sometimes I let things slide that I otherwise might not let my children get away with.  Such as...

BYU Museum of Paleontology
I can't believe it's taken me so long to go here.  This is a free museum on the outskirts of campus, near the stadium, and they have some really cool stuff there!   And one of the great things about it is that it's small - so we were able to go after school one day, walk around for 20 minutes, and leave.  Of course, the kids still loved it.
I LOVE museums where you actually get to see real scientists at work.
And did you know that Pteranodons were so big??

Another dinosaur that I had no idea of its potential size: Triceratops.
This skull is 9 feet long and if the horns weren't deteriorated they would be 3 feet long each.
Whoa mama!  Can you imagine meeting one of those??

Thanks for a fun visit, BYU Museum of Paleontology!

Trafalga
We decided to take Grammy to our new favorite family fun center.  This was our second time going since we bought our (cheap!) passes less than a month earlier.  This time Cat climbed the rock climbing wall and Jack did... almost nothing.  He finally decided he liked the Pirate Ship ride and since nobody else was interested in it, the kids rode it several times before we left.  I did it once and that was enough for me...

The BYU Creamery
In all of the trips my Mom has made to Utah over the years, she hasn't spent time in Provo.  So we were excited that we were able to accompany her on her first trip to the Creamery.  Of course, it didn't disappoint.

Grammy, we LOVED having you here.
Come back again soon!!!

And everyone else reading this - consider this your open invitation to come visit us.  We'd love to have you!

Picking up where we left off: Jack's Birthday

Okay.  Getting back on track here.

I mentioned that we celebrated Jack's birthday a couple days early because Ben was leaving the country for two weeks.  So, by the time the big day rolled around we had no more presents, cake, or anything.  Plus, it was a Sunday.  So I decided to give him a simple little surprise when he woke up that morning.

BALLOONS!
Lots of them.

Jack and Eliza had lots of fun with them.

Running around, kicking balloons.

Lounging with the balloons.

What kid doesn't love balloons?  Seriously.

Well, this one doesn't particularly love balloons.  Or at least she didn't care for them on Jack's birthday, cause she had a yucky stomach bug.  Which is the reason we didn't even go to Church, and Jack didn't get the birthday candy he's asked for every week since he graduated into Primary, the big kid's Sunday School, in January.  :-(

At least he got balloons!

Here I am.

So... we moved a few weeks ago.  And at about the same time, my computer died.  And all of my pictures were on my computer.  And Ben takes his computer to work every day and often uses it in the evenings and takes it out of town when he travels for work.  (Go figure.)  So... no blogging.

But guess what?  Ben revived my computer last night!  So I can get back to the blog, which I would really love to do.  I've been sitting on the couch for the last hour trying to get a post together to publish tonight, but I can't seem to keep myself awake enough to sort through pictures.  I guess a soccer tournament, Daisy Girl Scout hike and camp out, Llama Fun Day (yes, you read that correctly), and hiking the Y over a single weekend will do that to a gal...

Anyway, just wanted to say hello.  Hopefully I'll be awake enough to put together one or two substantive posts very soon.  We'll see.
