Jack Lately

I laughed when I realized that Jack was decked out in FSU
items from head to hip when I took him to Costco recently.
Jack definitely had some struggles with middle school and being
hybrid this year, but with the first half of the year over we feel like
he handled it pretty well.  We all learned a few things and hope for
an even better semester when he returns.
I was proud of Jack for being calm and still while a dermatology PA
took care of a pyogenic granuloma that suddenly popped up on his clavicle.
Sometimes Jack will sit down with this book and just start singing.
Jack was angry about something and took it out on the wall -
then he and Ben repaired and painted the whole wall.

I brought Jack hiking with me one Friday morning (which is always a catch-up day at school).
He had a pretty good attitude, until he decided his hands were too cold, even in his gloves.
I insisted he continue, hoping the coolness of seeing Battle Creek Falls mostly frozen at the end
of the short hike would be rewarding enough for him to get over his hands being cold.
We were at the waterfall soon and sure enough, he loved climbing around and exploring
and didn't mention his cold fingers again, even after we got back to the van.

We decided to make it a regular thing, so the next Friday we drove to a different spot, up at
South Fork in Provo Canyon, and just walked around and explored a little bit.  It's neat
to see the evidence of winter in the mountains and in water.  We loved seeing ice on the stream.

The Chicken Chronicles 12.25.20

Snow Chickens
I walked down to the storage room and noticed that Ms. Felix was hanging out
in the window well.  I assumed she'd be able to get herself out.
Bandit was keeping an eye on the situation.
Then, I looked up to see that Jack had come to the rescue.  I don't
know how he knew what was going on but I loved seeing him there.

Chicken Christmas Presents:

Ben & Suz made these awesome T-Rex arms for the chickens to wear!
The kids tried the arms on several of the chickens and Buttercup wore them best.
Bandit got a bowtie that attached to his no-crow collar.
Isn't he dapper?
Note: I'll try to get better pictures of the gifts later.

Christmas & Christmas Eve

We actually adjusted our calendar to enable us to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas a day early, since we would be out of town on Christmas (and I have a strong preference for celebrating Christmas at home).  Our Christmas Eve was really nice.  I had a follow-up appointment after my nose surgery, but other than that we had a lot of time at home to just hang out.  I was feeling much better after my appointment so I did some baking, made Wassail, and arranged a couple of plates of treats to take to neighbors on their Christmas Eve.  We had our traditional Bethlehem dinner, which included a lamb roast this time, and Cat suggested we watch the Christmas episode of "The Chosen," which was very good.  The kids gave their presents to each other, which was fun and sweet, and Luke gave me the gift he's been working on at school all year: a calendar with a different handprint picture for each month.  It definitely made me cry.

There was a bit of a struggle getting everyone settled for bed, especially since the girls wanted to sleep in the same room and watch a movie but the boys wanted something special to do too.  In the end, I set up a computer for the boys to watch the newest Grinch movie in their room while the girls watched a show in Cat's room.  Everyone got to bed later than they should have, and the two oldest kids had the hardest time sleeping that night.

(Luke looking on as Eliza opens the hair bands he bought her.)

"All I got was food!" - Jack's response to Cat giving him Mike & Ikes
and Cap'n Crunch.  I don't think he was complaining though.

Christmas morning started at about 7:45, and it was so fun!  The kids loved their gifts from Santa (thank goodness he could come a day early!) and from us, plus cool Disney mugs and special hot chocolate from Uncle Andy's family.

When Christmas gift-opening was finished, we had a yummy sourdough waffle, bacon, and eggs breakfast, and we all started using our gifts: playing games, Cat teaching Jack about his new drawing set, me using the new phone camera lens Ben got me, and Ben cutting things with one of his new knives.  I laid down and took a nap in the middle of all of it, then got busy finishing up the packing for our trip the next day.  We took a few minutes for a short and very cold bike ride, then Ben made a yummy Christmas dinner of pulled pork, roasted potatoes and brussels sprouts, and rolls.  That night we watched the family Christmas concert my niece put together, and it was so lovely!  Then we put the kids to bed almost on time, because we had to be up very early the next morning to start a trip to Florida.

More December Goings On

Eliza helped me sand wood blocks for tea light holders I made for Christmas gifts.

Smoothie Time

We saw one cousin family for a few minutes when
we dropped off their Christmas gifts.

Christmas Sunday

I had a septoplasty done the week before Christmas and was so congested that I
couldn't smell anything, and could only taste very strong flavors.  I asked Cat to make
me some of her fancy ramen, and Eliza helped.  It was great, and I loved the spice!

We made a point of visiting a cool Christmas light display I'd read
about in local news stories because its Hamilton medley got a
shout-out from Lin-Manuel Miranda himself.

Luke makes even a game of Uno more exciting.

Can you feel the love tonight?

Another outdoor cousin Christmas visit, this time with a gift exchange!

Thanks for coming over!

A few of the seasonal projects Luke brought home:

Eliza's teacher used the 12 days leading up to Winter break to incorporate holiday and winter themes into her curriculum. These themes were literally used all day long for science, social studies, reading comprehension, creative writing, math, and more; but she also added a craft and/or fun activity each day. On Hanukkah day, she made latkes for everyone to try. On Candy Cane day, each kid brought a candy cane of their choosing and they played a fun game where they passed the candy canes around a circle and everyone got to keep one. They talked about holiday recipes and traditions around the world, too. These were the themes: Snow, Caroling, Penguins, Candy Canes, Santa Claus, Hanukkah & Kwanza, Christmas Tree, Elf Day, Cookie, Gingerbread Men, Polar Express, and Snowman. Here are a few of the things Eliza brought home:

(a paper weaving similar to a Kwanzaa mat, called a mkeka)
Eliza made the white ornament on the left and
the tissue paper cookie cutter ornament on the right.
