The Chicken Chronicles 11.26.21

We're only allowed to have one rooster per 7 hens in our city, and since we had 7 hens and two roosters, we knew we needed to get rid of one of the roosters.  It was easy to decide which one would get the boot, since Henry, the Speckled Sussex we got earlier this year, was a bully to Felix.  He would force her out of the coop so that she would spend the day under the blackberry bush, trying to avoid him.

I posted about Henry on a Facebook group I'm part of for backyard chicken enthusiasts (which has very entertaining posts), but didn't get any interest.  Several days later, I posted him for sale on KSL and had a buyer within a few hours.  It was a man with several Speckled Sussex hens on a farm 45 minutes away, and he wanted to raise chicks.  Perfect!  So, at the beginning of November we said goodbye to Henry.  Catching him was tricky, but it provided for some entertainment for those of us watching.  He actually had to be caught a few times... and then we found out that the buyer would be coming on another day, which meant the process started all over again on the day the buyer actually came.

(the fun thing about this video is that the music is called "If I Had a Chicken.")

Treats for Henry after an epic round of Capture the Rooster.

Snuggles for Jack, since Henry is his rooster.

And then Henry got loose in the garage.

Felix (front and center) was happily hanging out with
the rest of the flock as soon as Henry left!

She's still recovering from her dog encounters, but looking much better.
