Dance Like No One, or, Lots of People are Watching

I've never heard of a school having a dance festival at the end of the year, but this seems to be a common tradition 'round these parts.  At Cat's school, each grade level learned 2-3 dances and performed them in a big grassy area behind the school.  I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was actually a really fun event.  Families were invited to stay and have lunch with the students afterwards, so we all had a big picnic in a nice shady spot once the festivities were over.  It was difficult timing for me, being moving week and all, but it was a nice break from the stress and busyness of the move.
There were seats and open areas for camp chairs and blankets all around a big square of grass. I tried to arrive early to get a good seat, but I had no idea where to sit!  So I went to the least populated area and laid our blanket down for Jack, Eliza, and me.  Well, guess who's class sat in the chairs right beside us?  And guess who was sitting on the end, literally next to our blanket?  And once the performance started, guess who was dancing in the corner closest to where we were sitting? Talk about a tender mercy from the Lord at a hectic time for me.
The First Graders had two island-themed dances, so they made these cool leis using Froot Loops.  Cute, huh?  And the girls got flowers in their hair.

It took Eliza about 2 seconds to realize that Cat's lei was edible.  Snack time!  Thanks for sharing, Cat.

Cat and her cute friend.

Eliza preferred to hang out with Cat instead of sitting on the blanket with me.

The first graders also did a hula "Little Brown Girl, which was very cute.  Sorry - no video for that one.

We had a great time watching Cat, and the many other kids, dancing that day, and loved our picnic lunch afterwards.  Thanks for a fun time, Cat!  It was just what we needed.

  1. It is so touching to know how special those extra moments with Cat were to you! I am so glad our schools never did that. I dont' think there has ever been a time in my life that I would have been able to do that first dance mistake-free! Poor uncoordinated children :(

  2. Word, Susannah. I'd have been the kid with the fat lip from falling and busting her face on the ground.

BUT what an adorable idea!! and a fun way to end the year! Those first graders look like they're having a blast and the weather looks gorgeous. I think we'd have to do our Dance Festival in February.....
